“Running Horse” by The Cesarians
At the top of today’s list is a group called “The Cesarians”. They’re a husband-and-wife team from the east side of London, England. Charlie Finke is a long-time punk rocker and his wife, Justine Armatage, used to play violin in a goth band.
He’s been in jail on drug offences, she’s had an affair and writes songs about it and they live together on a barge in a canal. When it comes to music, they have a rule: no guitars, ever. Pianos, trombones, drums—they’re fine but none of the six players in The Cesarians is allowed to even touch an electric guitar. The result is unusual.
The song is “Running Horse” and the album is self-titled. If you like groups that sound like they could be playing in a cabaret in Berlin in 1933 (and you already have all the Dresden Dolls albums), then The Cesarians are a good bet. You can also download a bunch of their stuff for free from their website.
“Skeleton” by The Decks
The Decks are from Detroit, although they sound like they could be English. They’d work nicely as an opener for, say, the Arctic Monkeys although some people say there’s more a surf thing to their sound. Give a listen to a song called “Skeleton” from their second album. Follow the link and you can get a free download.
“Poppy” by Zee Avi
Zee Avi is from Malaysia and while her stuff sounds all finger-snappin’ and carefree, if you listen closely, she’s darker than that. A song like “Poppy” isn’t about her dad but about heroin addiction. Jack Johnson really likes her and she’s just released her new record on his Brushfire record label.
“Moments After Waking” by Wire And Light
Wire And Light is a one-man creation by a dude in the Ottawa area. It’s minimalist electronica and the whole album is available for free. Check out the video this guy did below. Neat concept.
“Final Cliche” by Art Bergman
Finally, there’s Art Bergman. Art was around in the 80s and was a great former punk and singer-song writer from the west coast. Unfortunately, a lot of his stuff went missing for years because his record labels kept going broke.
Bob Rock—yeah, the Metallica producer—was involved in a CD called Poisoned Sessions and this material has turned up on a double disc called Lost Art Bergman. You can sample some of this stuff at www.bearwoodmusic.com
