Oh Hell, This Sadie is Sweet!

I’ve lived in this city for a long time, and my naiveté regarding this city's music scene is well documented. It would be difficult however, to have been ignorant of the names Ben Welland or Sadie Hell. Buzz has followed this fellow for some time (The Sun, The Citizen and most reputable music literature) and two years after its inception, the self titled album landed in January of 2010. Using my access to the stars (ok, so he emailed it to me) I got a sneak preview of the album and was rather surprised. Surprised, and freakin’ impressed.

Honestly. I’ve been a huge fan of (fellow Ottawa band) My Dad vs. Yours for a long time and “After Winter Must Come Spring” is one of my favorite albums, period. Along comes “Sadie Hell“ which now ranks right up there and is certainly the best album I’ve heard this year. I had no idea what I was expecting, but this level of complexity mixed with depth of sound surpassed my modest preconceived notions. From the anthemic “Onward, Hop!” (A favorite) to the more subdued “Pedestrians” there’s a nice blend of tempo.  The use of brass mixed into it along with the more traditional “rock” instrumentation is nice, but the star is Welland’s voice itself. Deep and distinctive it soars above the music itself and demands to be heard, taking the listener into his world.

I was glad to purchase the album as it was, in fact, an actual album (as in, vinyl) complete with fantastic artwork; the album is actually in a frame now hanging on a wall (the cover is the above picture, which I am aware is very large, but I REALLY dig it). No fear either about being able to listen to it as the vinyl included a copy of the CD itself. I got mine at Compact Music on Bank, but it's available at all the quality indie record shops in Ottawa.

While this "feature" is shorter than I would normally put up here, I wanted to share it quickly, rather than wait for a sit down with Ben (who happens to be touring out west AHEM Vancouver over the last few weeks). I hope to chat with him when he gets back, then I'll repost this with that write up.
