In-Flight Safety, The Maritimes' Best Kept Secret? I will admit that my knowledge of the Maritimes is severely lacking. It is the one area of Canada that I have never been, but have always wanted to go. Until recently, I had not paid much attention to their music scene either. Sure, like most music lovers, I knew Sloan, Eric's Trip and Thrush Hermit/Joel Plaskett. But that was pretty much where my knowledge ended.

By getting involved with lysten.ca, I have forced myself to start searching more diligently to discover great Canadian artists and thus, having to focus on some specific geographical music scenes. Montreal is a no-brainer right now and Toronto will always be a hot spot. But the one area that surprised me the most—in terms of the number of amazing artists and bands—was the Maritime Provinces.

Now, just off the top of my head, bands and artist based in the Maritimes include: Joel Plaskett (yes, I already mentioned him, but Three was a wonderfully ambitious accomplishment), Wintersleep, Hey Rosetta!, Matt Mays and El Torpedo, Buck 65, Julie Doiron,, The Trews, Jill Barber and, well, you get the point. But there is one band specifically that I would like to focus on at the moment. A true hidden-gem that I feel too many people outside of Halifax haven't heard … yet. They are called In-Flight Safety.

If you visited the site lately, you'll have (hopefully) read the recent interview with In-Flight Safety. If so, you will have to agree with me that this is an intelligent, uncompromising group that is pursuing their life's passion. A pursuit that last week had them complete a 16 hour straight drive from Cape Breton to Ottawa, arrive at the venue at 9:30 PM and (after two openers) ready to take the stage at a quarter to midnight. I was fortunate enough to be at that show. Where, after a rushed sound-check and slightly rocky start, they confirmed their talent and passion.

This is a band that is destined for some great things and we want to help share them with the world - or at least, for the time being, the rest of Canada. They have graciously shared a few tracks off of We Are an Empire, My Dear with us that we have included in our music player, as well as the new video to Model Homes, which you can view here.

If you like what you see/hear, they have two full-length albums available - We are an Empire, My Dear and The Coast is Clear - and an EP - Vacation Land - that you should definitely pick up.
