Bravestation heralds from the small town of Toronto and evoke the spirits of Interpol, Yeasayer, Wolf Parade, The Killers (without the ego).

If New Wave had started out in the Canadian wilderness, the result would probably resemble this Toronto-based band's dreamy, complex sound. Bravestation manages to mix the dark with the free-spirited; they blend folk-influences with synthesizers, and are able to be playful while displaying considerable musical skill. With their 2010 EP already being hailed by some critics as one of the best Canadian indie EPs of the year, Bravestation is the very first Indie Online Band To Watch.

U of O band releases debut EP

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN some of University of Ottawa’s finest get together for some dance-punk/post-punk music? You get the Birthday Girls, the three-man—that’s right, man—group comprised of Lloyd Alexander, Kevin Donnelly, and Kyle Kilbride. Long time best friends, Birthday Girls formed in 2009, and used synthesizer to distinguish their music from the traditional grunge sound.

“It’s kind of a mix between […] I’d say dance music and noise rock. It’s kind of dance-punk, post-punk,” explains Donnelly. “It’s just music that’s heavy, but you can dance to it.” Birthday Girls is easy to differentiate from other bands due to their unique instrument selection.

The Weeds are a young Rock N' Roll band that bring many musical influences from past generations back to life with their high energy, head banging live preformances. The Weeds began as a high school rock n roll band in November 2006 with dreams as high as they could get. Skyler Radmore approached Adam Traversy during a lunch break at school and asked if he would be interested in starting a band where Radmore sings and Traversy played guitar. Since Traversy knew that both their past groups had been in a downword spiral, he had nothing to lose by accepting the offer and trying to write some new music. The duo found themselves a drummer by the name of Chris Dixon who's musical skill and dedication seemed to be at the same level as the other two boys. Now a trio, the group set out in search of a bassist, but not just a guitarist who knew his way around a four string. They wanted someone who loved the bass more than any other instrament. Late in Radmore's previous project where he played lead guitar, a bassist by the name of Shawn Baldwin came in and layed down a solid bass line one groove after the other. Radmore sugested...

Born in the Southern Great Lake lowlands, The Woody Allen's have found a beautiful
blend of rusty roots rock and folk melodies, and they’ve found it in the shade
of the tweed umbrella of classic country music. The rich vocal duets of Mack Edwards (vocals/guitar) and Lynn Seward (vocals/keys) harkens back to the good ol’ days of John and June, while Brent Hebert (Drums/Mandolin), Michael Middleton (Bass) team up to create a rhythm section that can subtly sway you or rock you like a freight train.  Joining the Allens (for the Lysten Festival in Spetember of '10) is Hamilton native Ryan Barwin, whose expert and compelling pedal steel tones fortify an already harmonically rich entity.

Having been fortunate enough to share the stage with the likes of; The Warped 45s, Dale Murray, Christina Martin, Olenka and the Autumn Lovers, The Treasures and Sarah Blackwood (of The Creepshow), The Woody Allens strive to continue the legacy of their peers and heroes and continue to catch the attention fellow artists and audiences.

Boats play music songs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with lyrics about dismemberment (the good kind), excellent posture, and orthodontic surgery. A junky indie-pop band with high-end hopes but low-end equipment (total net worth of keyboard section: $40, all thrift store finds), Mat Klachefsky’s bizarre vocal chords mixed with his “infectiously catchy” pop songs and boundless energy have been freaking out audiences ever since they released their critically acclaimed first album "Intercontinental Champion" to local audiences in October 2007. Since then they have embarked on four Canadian tours, played a packed houses at SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, WCMA's and Sled Island, and charted solidly all across Canada.

Boats just finished recording their 2nd full length album "Cannonballs, Cannonballs" which will be released in May.

A band called The Radio Dept. (Courtesy of The Muse Box)

The band was formed by Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson when they were in the school together in the late 90's. The name was taken from a gas station/radio repairer in Lund (Sweden) which had a large sign with the name »Radioavdelningen« (The Radio Department in Swedish) hanging outside their shop. Just like today Elin and Johan hung out with people who, if they didn't play music, were into photo, film, art and the likes. The Radio Deptartment was a suiting name as it became a department of its own among their friends' activities.

For a few years there was some random activity, members coming and going, and recordings being made,  after a while the Radio Dept. seized to exist. When Martin Larsson and Johan Duncanson started a band together in 1998 they decided to use the name. Between 99-01 the new Radio Dept. did a lot of noisy recordings, often on 4-tracks in friends' living rooms or at home.
